The ammunition for the 0.45 gun at present in possession of the Corps would fetch from £100 to £150, if sold.
The cost is so extremely small and the advantage so apparent and so great that I have no hesitation in asking His Excellency the General Officer Commanding to do me the favour of forwarding this my application, for the Conversion of the 0.45 Maxims now in possession of the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps to the 0.303 Calibre, to His Excellency the Governor of the Colony for his sanction and the approval of the Council.
As there are 12 guns, I recommend that 6 be sent at a time.
As regards the Belts the present ones are perfectly useless and will have to be replaced in any case either with 0.45 or 0.303 slips.
I have &c.
(Signed) R. B. Mainwaring,
Colonel,
Acting Commandant,
Hong Kong Volunteer Corps.
