Government House, HongKong, 1st June, 1899.

Sir,

I have the honour to forward for your information and consideration copy of a letter from Colonel Mainwaring, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, Acting Commandant of the HongKong Volunteer Corps, recommending the conversion of the 0.45 Maxim guns of the Corps to the .303 Calibre, together with a copy of a minute by Major-General Gascoigne endorsing that recommendation.

2. The work of conversion could be undertaken in the local ordnance workshops, and the cost, including the necessary parts, would amount to about £460.

3. Subject to your approval, I propose to make provision in next year's Estimates for that amount, and I forward herein, in duplicate, a requisition for the parts etc. required for the work of conversion, which I request may be obtained by the Crown Agents from the Maxim Nordenfeldt Guns and Ammunition Company Limited, and sent out by an early opportunity.

(both despatch and 1st enclosure, encl. duplicates) to C. A., and ask them to obtain the cost.

(The C. A. appears satisfied that the actual conversion can be done locally).
