However, until the limit of our advance has been finally decided upon we must expect troubles on the borders, or at least excitement among the inhabitants. I have been under the impression that this Tung-Kun valley north of Sham-Chün valley was a densely populated district, but Mr. Bagnall-field, R.B., who has just come down through that district from Canton with the party surveying for the Canton Kowloon Railway informs me that the district is by no means populous and that the villages are small.

The opening sentence of Mr. Schaub's letter is interesting as proving that a number of those who attacked the British forces at Tai-po on the 17th. and 18th. April came down from Chinese territory.

The most serious aspect of the situation is the possibility that those turbulent people may attack the German mission, I hope that my message to the Viceroy of Canton through our Consul will have the effect of impelling him to afford immediate and effectual protection to the missions.
