Those objections, however, are now waived (subject to certain conditions, which I understand Mr. Tanner is prepared to fulfil) as you will observe from the enclosed copy of a letter to Mr. Tanner from the Bishop of Victoria, who is manager of the Diocesan School.
3. As Mr. Tanner appears to possess the necessary qualifications for the post and is recommended by his present employers and Dr. Wright, and as the appointment of a local candidate would be more convenient and economical, I beg to recommend his appointment in succession to Mr. James

on probation for one year in the first instance and subject to confirmation in the appointment, should he give satisfaction in the performance of his duties.
4. I enclose the usual paper of particulars of the vacant office, No. 5 of which does not, of course, apply to candidates appointed locally, and, therefore, in the event of your approval of Mr. Tanner's appointment, it is not to be sent to him.

5. As Mr. Tanner is required by his agreement with the Diocesan School authorities to give six months' notice of his intention to terminate his present appointment, I shall be glad to receive a reply to this despatch by telegraph, in order that his services may be at the disposal of this Government as soon as possible.
