Attends the office ordinarily between 9 & 5, according to the work. His duty is more especially to be in the office when the Postmaster General is absent. He will also attend whenever contract mails arrive. His main duty is to supervise & organise the work of the General Office, distributing mail work as may be required, for which purpose he should keep an eye on the mail book. He will also give out copying &c. and see that clerical work, including the Letter books &c., does not fall into arrears.

He will at once report any Chinese who is not in the office on his turn for duty, and will see that the letter carriers, messengers, and boatmen are clean and neatly dressed. He will inspect the unclaimed, Ship, and Registered case weekly, and will satisfy himself that their contents are in order.

He will check mail notices, draft routine official letters, acknowledge remittances, forward postage stamps, and check all accounts kept in the office. He will also keep the Gratuity Book and check monthly accounts from the Ports.

Whenever any contract mail is signalled, he will ascertain what steamers are remaining behind and what are leaving shortly, so that as many mails as possible may be got off.
