Sir,

Enclosure 16391 RECO -26 JUN Treasury 258 19th May 1899. 257

With reference to your letter No. 788 of the 17th instant, I have the honour to request that His Excellency the Governor will be so good as to move the Secretary of State to reconsider his decision in regard to the question of salary.

It is apparent that, for some reason unknown to me, he has decided that my promotion from the post of Postmaster General is to carry no increase of salary; but when it is pointed out to him that such promotion means a loss of $1000 per annum (i.e. £100 paid by the London G.P.O.), I am sure that the sense of fairness will lead him to reverse his ruling.

As regards the matter of appointment on probation, I regret that I am unable to understand in the circumstances why that course has been adopted.

I have been in charge of the Treasury for more than three out of the past four years and have been commended by various Officers Administering the Government, the work of the office at the end of my first year being thoroughly up to date, a state which had not previously existed for several years.

I would therefore urge that, in view of the above and in view of the many services performed by me during my residence in this Colony, His Excellency would be so good as to represent to the Secretary of State the propriety of removing what I cannot but feel is a stigma on my character as a public servant.

Colonial Secretary,

I am &c.

(Signed) A. M. Thomson.
