When I was on the Detective Staff all the members of the staff including English and Chinese Police received presents in money from the Licensed Pawnbrokers in Hong Kong.
The presents were given at Christmas time. I was a Constable on the Detective Staff and received $20 a year. Detective Sergeants got more. I believe that Inspectors Stanton and Loung got $50 a year each. The Jik and Ri Shang Pawnshops used to pay out the money; but the money was subscribed by all the pawnshops.
These presents were paid to the Police in order to induce the Police not to give trouble to the pawnshops when searching for stolen property.
