demand for land and the available assets of the Government

in this respect, I venture to think that the proceeds from

Land sales during 1900 may be safely estimated at $300,000

or $100,000 in excess of the average annual estimate of

$200,000 on this account. In this connection I would refer

you to the enclosed list of possible Land sales in 1900, which

if effected, would produce $492,400, but I am not disposed

at present to adopt a higher estimate than $300,000 for next

year, although it is possible that land in the New Territory

may also be in demand.

II. If my expectations as regards the re-

venue for 1900 are realised, the sum to be provided by the

introduction of fresh taxation will be reduced to $405,000,

which amount would be further reduced by $104,000, if, as

anticipated in paragraph 6 of this despatch, that balance is

realised at the close of the current financial year and can be

carried forward to next year's account. It is perhaps however

better to omit this sum in considering the Estimates for 1900
