ENCLOSURE
3.
MINUTE BY THE CAPTAIN SUPT. OF POLICE.
Hon. Colonial Secretary,
18
I am not in favour of making the Police subscribe to the Widows' and Orphans' Fund for the following reasons.
(a) In the last ten years the following relief has been given to the wives of deceased European Police Officers.
1887.
(1) Widow of Inspector Lindsay passage home in
(2) Widow of Sergt. McDonald 34 months pay and passage home in 1889.
(3) Widow of Inspector Swarston $600 in 1891. Three deaths in 10 years 1/3 a year and taking the strength of the ranks entitled to free quarters at 30 gives about 11 per 1000 or 1 in 90 death rate.
Any calls on Government therefore for relief to widows of deceased Police officers (European) is not likely to be heavy.
If contribution to the Widows' and Orphans' Fund were introduced the following would be the amounts the several ranks would have to pay monthly.
