Rough Translation of a report made by Ho Tung last October, corroborating information given to H. H. May by Ho Tung.
Results of inquiries made into the matters at Nam Tau, Sham Chun, Kam Tin.
1. On the 20th October, Cheng Yüan Tsao, a Chinese official, went to Nam Tau with 600 soldiers under his command. On arrival, he ordered Major Ting to take 300 soldiers to Sham Chuen & keep order there. The remaining soldiers were dispatched to the places: 55. Wong Kong Heung (Wong Long Village), Tung Wah Hui (Tung Wah market), and Sam Po Chuk (Three bamboo trusses).
2. Chung Shine Yung, the man who put up the flags in Tung Wah Hui, is a Hakka man of Wong Kong Heung. He returned from Honolulu. His wealth is estimated at over $10,000. He is not a gentry. At the January time, a society was formed at Sham Chun; the formation lasted 3 days. The leaders are Cheung Chi Lau, his nephew Cheung Chi Tap, and a man surnamed Choi, all of whom are bullies of the said village.
