protection for which he had incurred the responsibility, and that They have been ignorant of the state of affairs.

This being so, I contend that ample reparation is due to the Colony for the expense to which it was put, and for the troubles, present and prospective, brought upon it by the active or passive assistance given by the Canton Government to these movements.

With regard to the duties undertaken by the Viceroy towards the Colony, there is here nothing to suggest that the arrangement was unsatisfactory.

There is here nothing feeling that The Extension of the Colony should be carried still further to the north, and that the lease of 99 years should be changed pro a grant in perpetuity. I hear that Mr. Stewart Lockhart is an advocate for the Extension to include the Entire Sam Shing Valley and to the east of the range of hills which divide it.
