But unlike other tropical colonies, Hong Kong is so distant that no visit to a civilized temperate country can be made in six weeks, and long leave involves serious loss of salary, especially when we remember that such leave would be taken in the summer months when all the ships have some berth, and everybody who can get away has left the island, expenditure then being at its minimum. Remembering that when the Governor goes on leave, the entertainment allowance is paid to the officer administering the government, I submit that the representation might be made to the Governor of this Colony that if he were to take three months' leave every alternate year instead of six weeks every year, he shall be granted the leave on full salary.
