For the post of Assistant master Queen's College Hong Kong, I submit the name of W. Grant of Pembroke College Cambridge, who was selected by Professor Lewis, 57 Cambridge, from three candidates.
Mr. Grant was placed first class in the Mathematical Tripos 1894, & Jurist 1897. He has held various teaching appointments at Muscat and Macleod, and has good testimonials.
The Governor is favourably impressed with Mr. Grant and considers him to be a suitable candidate for the post.
To save time, I have attached to this despatch the replies from Referees, which are satisfactory.
Government House, Hong-Kong, 24th March, 1899.
With reference to paragraph 3 of your despatch No.191 of the 28th July last, I have the honour to enquire when the new Assistant Master for Queen's College may be expected to arrive in the Colony.
The Head Master, Dr. Wright, states that with the present large number of pupils, the services of an additional Master are urgently needed, and suggests that if there is a difficulty in obtaining a University candidate, a trained certified master might be selected for the post.
I have the honour to be, Sir, Your most obedient Humble Servant,
Henry Blake
GOVERNOR, &c.
To the Right Honourable
Joseph Chamberlain, M.P.
