On the other hand he has more power to make himself understood

on unfamiliar subjects, and he can explain his meaning more

clearly. He appears also to have a broader knowledge of Chinese

than Mr.Hazeland and will therefore probably be better able

to check interpretation. He can do without an interpreter on

ordinary occasions,
