5. Accommodation on the ground floor (one room)

should be provided for a Custodian, who however will not be per-

mitted to cook on the premises. This can readily be arranged by

curtailing the dimensions of the Prisoners' room now unneces-

sarily large. Two cells are considered sufficient.

6. A special entrance for the clerical staff of

the Registrar on the west front, as suggested by the architects

is considered desirable, and will divide the accommodation pro-

vided for the Deputy Registrars which will be more convenient.

7. The store-room should be on the ground floor,

chiefly for the storage of the effects of de-

ceased persons, and it is evidently undesirable that such goods

should have to he carried to the top of the building.

8. Only one room for records is provided on the

ground floor, namely that attached to the Land Office. A similar

room should if possible he provided for the Registry records.

9. If possible a lift to the top floor should

be provided. During the hot season, for many months in the sum-

mer, three flights of stairs to surmount is very trying in this

climate.

10. Hooks should he provided over all windows

on the west as a protection from the sun and on the east and

north as a protection from heavy drifting rain.

11. Iron or steel girders should he used for

floors and roofs instead of wood everywhere in the building.

12. The construction and materials used in the

flat roofs should receive very careful attention. It is extreme-
