I am directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to inform you that, subject to your being revaccinated, as recommended by the medical adviser of this Department, he proposes to select you for appointment as Junior Grade Assistant Master at Queen's College Hongkong with salary at the rate of $1800 subject to a deduction Exchange Compensation (by which half of your salary is made up to the equivalent of 3 1⁄2 to the Dollar) so long as this allowance is continued to other members of the staff for service; but the privilege is subject to an annual vote of the Legislature.

You will be required, if appointed, to begin duty early in the ensuing year.
You are to understand that it will be continued in respect of the pecuniary responsibility attaching to your offer.

You are to understand that your employment will be under the Colonial Government; that your emoluments will be paid solely from the funds of the Colony; and that the appointment will be subject to the Colonial Regulations in force for the time being, which are published in the annual "Colonial Office List," and can also be consulted in this office.

The Regulations (Nos. 81 to 96) specify the proceedings which are taken in a Colony when it is deemed necessary to suspend an officer with a view to his removal from the service; but you must also understand that you will hold the appointment subject to the pleasure of the Crown, and may be removed if it is signified through the Secretary of State that the pleasure of the Crown is that you should no longer hold it, in which case no special formalities are required.
