It can be best raised without exciting the suspicion or irritating the feelings and prejudices of the inhabitants, if we adhere as closely as possible to the present system and sources of taxation. If this is done, it is anticipated that there will be no difficulty in raising at the outset annual revenues sufficient to meet the cost of administering the new territory. The expenditure is estimated at $125,000. To arrive at this amount of taxation at the rate of 2/6 per head of the population will be sufficient.
