Sir,
June 1898.
Hong
In further reference to your letter of the 8th
March last, 2202/98, respecting an application from the
Green Island Cement Company for the extension of the
lease on which they hold Kowloon Marine Lot No. 40,
Kong: I am directed to acquaint you for the information
of Mr.Secretary Chamberlain that Lord Lansdowne is of
opinion that the proposed extension of the lease from 75
years to 999 years is undesirable; and considers that the
former term is quite long enough to enable the Company
to recoup themselves for their outlay, in view of the
present great demand for, and high price of cement.
Moreover, it is hardly possible to foresee what cir-
cumstances may hereafter arise to render it undesirable,
whether in the interests of the War Department or of the
Colony, that these works shall remain in their present
location beyond the shorter term.

Colonial Office.
