August 3rd, 1898.
With reference to my despatch No.144 of
July 13th, I have the honour to forward copy of a fur-
ther despatch which I have received from Mr. Mans-
field, Her Majesty's Acting Consul at Canton, respect-
ing the protection of British Companies registered in
Hongkong, though promoted by Chinese subjects.
Mr. Mansfield in his despatch comments on
the remarks of the Crown Advocate, which formed an
enclosure in my despatch No.144. With regard to these
comments I think Mr. Mansfield is right in thinking
that the Crown Advocate has not given sufficient
weight to the Chinese side of the question; aleo I
think Mr. Mansfield is right in believing that the
multiplication of nominally British Companies would
give
he Marquess of Salisbury. K.G.,
