suan protection of the Company's business it should,

so fer as may be necessary, be afforded to those

employed therein and in the course of such em-

ployment but not further.

I can quite appreciate Mr.Mansfield's diffi-

culties in the matter, but I think there is no

doubt

but that the law being as it is the first

question put by Mr. Mansfield in nis despeton to your-

self must be answered in the offirmative.

It is to be remembered that a British Company

being amenable to English Lew those dealing wita

such a Company in Canton or elsewhere in China nave

+

this advantage that the whole property of the Com-

pany is attacnable in case of need, by Her Majesty's

Courts.

The property and business of a British Company

is, in my opinion, entitled to Pritish protection

and in tse conduct of such business the persons of

those carrying it on, the Company and all its assets

are under the jurisdiction of English law, end the

Companies Ordinances of Hongkong if the Company is

there registered.

The personal protection to be given in case of

need is such as would be given to the Chinese ser-

vants of a British subject whilst employed on their

master's business.

I nave,

(Signed)

&C.,

H.P.Wilkinson.

Crown Advocate.
