tried for wilful murder in Hongkong, found guilty and

executed; the fact being mentioned that intercession

in the highest quarters was made by Trein Majesties,

the King and Queen of Fortugal, to obtain a commuta-

tion of the sentence of desta pronounced upon the man

in question,

The comment generally made upon this inc1-

dent is to the effect that there is no room for Sup-

prise in the failure of the intercession exerted;

that the case was in no respect one of extradition,
