Sir,
I am directed by the Marquess of Salisbury to state,
for the information of Mr Secretary Chamberlain, that the Portuguese Charge' d'Affaires at this Court called and stated
that Joao Malta Ozorio, a Portuguese Subjact, is now on
his trial for murder at Hongkong, and that his Government
earnestly press that, in case of his conviction, capital punishment may not be inflicted.
I am to request that the Governor of Hongkong
may be informed by telegram that this application has been
made.
