Sir,
With reference to your letter of the 29th August
1898, No.18924/98, respecting the proposed acquisition by
the Admiralty of the strip of Colonial land between Marine
Lot No.21 (late Sharp's Buildings) and the Commissariat
Buildings at Hong Kong, required under the scheme for the
Extension of H.M. Naval Yard, I am commanded by the Lords
Commissioners of the Admiralty to acquaint you, for the
information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies,
that My Lords have obtained the sanction of the Lords
Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to the purchase of
the strip of land in question for the sum of $5,138 the
price named in your letter under reply and My Lords agree
therefore to purchase the property for this sum.
My Lords will be glad to complete the purchase
and transfer at once.
With respect to the question raised in Admiralty
letter of 24th October 1898 W.L.2771/3951 as to whether
this strip of land would be subject to Crown Rental, and,
if so, whether actual payment would be waived, My Lords
are informed by the War Office that the other half of the
lane which was leased to that Department was subject to a
Crown Rent, but payment was not made, in accordance with
the general principle that the Military Department should
have allotted to them free of charge all Government lands &c
that may be considered necessary.
Under Secretary of State
for the Colonies,

COLONIAL OFFICE,
