cost of $8000, the whole to be handed over at a nominal rent to a representative Committee of Kowloon residents, who were to provide & maintain a suitable staff to work the school at their own expense under the provisions of the grant-in-aid code, the buildings to be kept in repair by the Government. His Excellency the Governor further promised to endeavour
to procure the services of a master whilst the school was being built.No definite acceptance or refusal of this offer is on record, but whilst it was apparently under the conside- ration of the Committee, the Hon. Secretary wrote to the Pri- vate Secretary asking to he informed on the following points.
(1) If the Committee provided school room accommodation during the building of the new school, would the Government provide quarters for the interim teacher and would the Commit-
tee be allowed to retain the fees.
(2) Would the Govt.continue the grant of $50 a month for
a female teacher for a limited number of years.
To this the Private Secretary replied that the minor points in question would be considered when the larger ques-
tion was settled.
In February, 1897, the Inspector of Schools for- warded an application from the School Committee for the con- tinuance of the special grant of $50 a month towards the sa- lary of a female teacher. This was sanctioned temporarily and the question of providing a site and a school building at Go-
vernment expense came up again for consideration. The Commit-
tee
