In reply to the Petition of the Chinese Civil
Servants of the Colony forwarded in a letter dated 17th, June
1898 and signed by yourself and others, I am directed to ac-
quaint you for your own information and for the information
of your co-petitioners that His Excellency the Officer Ad-
ministering the Government has decided to grant in most cases
an increase of salary to Chinese Government officers subject
to the sanction of the Secretary of State being obtained.
