The most valuable answers from firms &c., in
Hong-Kong on the subject of the pay of Portuguese were those
from Messrs. Jardine,Matheson & Co, and the HKong & Shanghai
Bank. The former fix a maximum of $150; the latter have no ma-
ximum apparently but pay for length of service and throw in a
bonus occasionally. If the larger scope, the lighter duties,
the shorter hours, and the pension which mark the Government
service are considered, there is no doubt, I submit, that the
Portuguese Clerk in Government employ is proportionately bet-
ter off than the Clerk in an ordinary mercantile firm and as
well off as a clerk in the Bank. Of the 50 clerks in Govern-
ment employ only 16 have received no increase since 1895;of
these, 5 have under 10 years's service; 5 have under 5 years'
service;2 have been recommended herein for increases and the
other three draw sufficient salaries for their service & duties,
