Enclosure 2.
No: 1479.
Sir,
E. . d'Aquino, Esq.,
Colonial Secretary's Office,
Hongkong, 22nd. August, 1898.
I am directed to inform you that the letter dated
14th. Tune last, signed by yourself and other gentlemen,
and praying for an increase in your salaries, has been
carefully considered by the Officer Administering the
Government who regrets, however, that he is unable to grant
your joint request.
There may be a very few officers whose cases
are deserving of attention and in respect of whom recommend-
ations for an increase in salary may be made to the
Secretary of State.
I have,
(sa.)
T. Sercombe Smith
Actg. Colonial Secretary.
