the Hongkong Government Service, by reason of greater
expenses attendant on residence in "ongkong, there should
likewise be an admission as regards your petitioners that
living in the Colony for them has also become a greater
struggle than formerly.

Your petitioners therefore pray that,
having regard to the reasons set forth in this petition
and in its Enclosure I, some concession should be mude
them to enable them to meet the difficulty which has beset
them to maintain the appearance of perfect respectability
which their respective offices dem..nd of them, on account
of their minimized earnings caused by the fall in the
value of money and by the additional expenses for house-
rent, food, and other necessaries of life generally in
Hongkong.
