of Queen's College should invite, or otherwise encourage a Master
from another School in the Colony to go there before the expiration of his term of Agreement, and thus throw the expense of a new passage upon the funds.
I may say
In reference to the case which occurred last year, that having the honour of being a member of the Governing Body of Queen's College, I p rotested at a meeting of that Body against the principle of Queen's College thus drawing its Assistant Masters away from other Schools in the Colony. I was prevailed upon to withold any protest at the time by the suggestion of the Chairman that after such an appointment should have been made I should apply to the Government for assistance in securing the passage of another Master from England for the Diocesan School. I made such application in due course and in due form, but no assistance was granted. Conse- quently we had to bear the expense of a new passage; and we are fearful lest there should be a repetition of thisprocess. It will we think, be evident that it is highly undesirable in the interests of Education generally and of the Diocesan School in particular, that we should thus be the means of augmenting the Staff of the chief Government School which is quite able to obtain its own Assistant Masters direct from home
Again it might be urged that we ought to guard ourselves against such loss and inconvenience by making our terms of Agreement with Assistant Masters more stringent. But this we think is undesir- able, and we trust that we shall not be compelled to do so in the future, as such a course would probably limit our choice in making an appointment
It having been reported to me that another of our Masters has made application, my object,Sir, in addressing you in this matter is to respectfully protest against any appointment from the Staff of the Diocesan School to Queen's College similar to that which was made last year unless the Assistant Master has completed his agreed
term of service at the former place; or to request that if a Master is taken from us the Colonial Government may be advised to grant to usthe passage money thereby saved.
