I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt

of His Excellency the General Officer Commanding's letter No.

1071 of the 18th, ultimo in which he asks this Government to

formally convey to him its sanction to the transfer to the

War Department of Gun Club Hill, Kowloon.

2. Under ordinary circumstances this Govern-

ment would be prepared to accede to His Excellency's request

until the value of the site had been agreed upon and the me-

thod of payment settled. As however the Officer Administering

the Government is of opinion that the exigencies of Military

requirements justify in the present instance a departure from

the general rule just enunciated,His Excellency intends to

treat this application as an exceptional one, and accordingly

herewith conveys to you his sanction of the transfer of the

site to the War Department.

3. The Director of Public Works advises that

the site, which contains 312,309 sq. feet, is valued at 8 cents

a foot, and that the Crown Rent will be at the rate of $300 an

acre per annum. This will make the premium $27,984, and the
