for the Philippine Islands.
Manila, 24th. May, 1898,
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt
of your Excellency's despatch No.45/G under date of the 18th.
instant enclosing copy of a telegram from the Secretary of
State for the Colonies inquiring whether the Sisters of the
Convent of the Assumption are in safety.
In reply thereto I beg to state that the Sis-
ters in question have been removed from the Convent in ques-
tion to a place of refuge more inland, as the Convent would
be near the line of fire if Rear-Admiral Dewey of the United
States' Squadron bombarded Manila. If the Indian Rebels join
the United States Troops when they arrive there is sure to be
great disturbances and I am afraid many Spaniards may be mas-
sacred by the Indians as took place the other day at Bolinao
where the Telegraph Station formerly existed, the Mayor and
Town Council (Spaniards) being literally cut to pieces. In the
Island of Cebu similar acts of vandalism took place; I don't
want to be an alarmist but there is intense hatred between
Spaniards and Indians.
To His Excellency
Major-General Black,
Commander-in-Chief and
Acting Governor,
HONG
KONG.
I have, &c.,
