The two questions as to (1) the proposed diver-

sion of the MacDonnell Road and (2) the value of the site

which the Military Authorities desire to be possessed of,re-

quired reference to the Director of Public Works.

2. The tracing which accompanied His Excel-

lency the Major-General Commanding's Letter of the 22nd,ulti-

mo,and which marked the diversion proposed by the Military

Authorities, has been accepted by Mr.Ormsby and will show the

trend of Macdonnell Road. That question is therefore settled

80 far as the Military and Colonial Authorities are concerned

if the land sought is handed over to the Military Authorities.

3. The request that Murray Battery should be

surrendered in exchange for the proposed site between Bowen

Road and Kennedy Road has been refused by the Military Au-

thorities on the ground that that battery is required for a

repository for drill and instruction for the Royal Artillery.

This must be a new use to which it is contemplated to put the

battery site, for, so far as my experience goes, I do not remem-

ber ever having observed any user for such purposes of that

site.My observation has not however been constant or close,

and the battery may have been in frequent use without the

knowledge of myself or other Civil officers.
