somewhat large. The gambling carried on at Cheung Hing Stred

was the same class of business. These two gambling houses

were able to be kept open because all the Police were bri-

bed & kept silent. I know as a matter of fact that all the

Chinese Detectives were bribed. Also that Police Constables

as well were bribed. All the Chinese detectives believed

that the Detective Inspectors received bribes. I believed

that the Inspectors received bribes. If not I would have

given the information about the two gambling houses to them

I know the Inspector present. I believed that he received

bribes. I am on good terms with the Inspector. I have never

told him that people said he took bribes. I received bribes

myself. I was paid bribes not to report to the Inspectors

that there were these gambling houses.

Q. If the Inspectors were bribed what use

was there in the gambling houses bribing you? A. The gam-

bling houses paid the detectives bribes because they were

afraid we should report to the Superintendent of Police.

years in Taipingshan. In the block between East Street,Pos-

session Street, Lascar Row & Hollywood Road, I cannot remember

whether there has always been gambling in some of the

houses during the last 20 years. During the 16 years that I

have been in the Police there has been always some gambling
