Note
tors/were not bribed it would be impossible to carry on the
gambling for more than two or three days.
If all the Chinese detectives & District
Watchmen and men on the beat were bribed the Inspectors could find the gambling out when on patrol.
I do not know what means they would have of knowing. People would tell them. For instance the Inspectors go to catch a thief. They do not know the thief but people point him out. There is nothing about the gambling house that anyone would notice who was passing by. We used to shut the door when the Inspectors came past. They could not know
unless some one told them.
The houses in which the gambling was carried
on are not large. We used to have a lamp alight in the
ground floor during the day in No.5 Wa Lane.
In March, April & May 1895 I cannot remember
where we were gambling. Sometimes we ceased for some months.
All the evidencein-chief which I have given to day I have
not given 6 or 7 times before. I have said some of it not all.
I have said before that Inspectors received bribes. I have
not been asked before what I have been asked to-day. I have
made a statement before with reference to this gambling
which has been written down by the Crown Solicitor.
