7.I have been encouraged to believe from cer-
tain remarks which fell from His Excellency on the occasion
of the opening meeting of the Legislative Council that the
Governor considers the salaries paid to some of the Officer
of the Government are inadequate, and that if the finances
of the Colony admitted of it,His Excellency would gladly
sanction increases. The proposal I now make will cost the
Government nothing, while the abolition of the Special Engi-
neer's appointment will save the Estimate for the Praya
works $380 a month.
8.I forbear here to speak of the extra work
and responsibility that for a time at least will be thrown
on me, and it would be premature for me to complain now of
the amount of salary attached to an office I have only held
for a few months, but hope that at no distant time, the pay
of the Director of Public Works here may be at least made
equal to that paid in other colonies where the duties are
neither heavier nor more responsible.
I have,&c.,
(Su.)R. D. ORMSBY,
Director of Public Works.
