penditure which, it was apparent would be incurred in 1897,
and is $8,500 below the actual expenditure for 1897, an ex-
penditure which I see no reason to expect will be exceeded

it is difficult to go:but at present I foresee no causes.
which will prevent in the next few years a recurrence of
the same favourable balances.
10. In the report of the Director of Public
Works already alluded to, that officer estimates that the
total proceeds of land sales, including lots still available

in Taipingshan and as the Praya Reclamation as well as
other lands, will, during the next four years fetch a sum of
$1,300,000. During a conversation with Mr. Ormsby, I was in-
formed by him that the value of the Marine Lot on the Praya
Reclamation originally designated as a site for public of-
fices, is not included in this sum of $1,300,000 which also
does not include the value of an area of about 64,000 sq.
feet,lying opposite the Sailors' Home and valued at
$200,000 which was at one time selected as a site for the
erection of new Public Works Stores buildings for which a
suitable site has since been found at Wantsai in the East-
ern portion of the City of Victoria.
