LAND FORCE

1st. Class Constables. All are married and the large majority

have their wives and families residing in Hong-Kong.

2nd. Class Only five are unmarried. The wives of 34 reside

in the Colony and of 15 in China.

3rd. Class

-

41 have their wives here,36 in China and 50 are

unmarried.

WATER

POLICE

Of the Sergeants 4 are married with their

wives in the Colony 6 have wives in China and 1 is un-

married.

Of the 1st. Class P. Cs. the figures are 6,4 &

11, and of the 2nd.class 2,10 & 20 respectively.

There are no quarters for married Chinese

Constables or Sergeants.

It must also be remarked that the unmarried

men have for the most part relatives to support. Very few of

them are wholly unencumbered.

6. I am forced to the 'conclusion therefore

that the Chinese Police as a whole are underpaid, especially

having regard to the practice of early marriages among Chi-

nese.

7. To remedy this evil I would recommend as

follows:

(a) Grant to the Chinese Land & Water Police
