this to be the case, I in the beginning of December request-

ed Dr. Chung to himself administer Quinine to every case

diagnosed malarial, whether under his own care or not; and

this has since then been regularly done by him, fortunately

without the active opposition that might have been antici-

pated. There have been protests, and a number of patients left

the Hospital rather than submit to the treatment insisted

upon, but the practice seems to be well established, and the

mortality from malarial diseases will, I hope,be much de-

creased. At the same time I have secured considerable in-

provement in the dieting of cases of fever and diarrhaea,

though there still remains much to be desired in this res-

pect.

For some months back I have been pressing on

the Directors the desirability of appointing a Chinese of

good standing as Steward of the Hospital, to be at the head

of the working staff of the institution, and to be responsi-

ble for the sanitary maintenance of the buildings, for the

cleanliness of the patients and of their clothing and bed-

ding, and for the proper carrying out of the conservancy

system. The former board of Directors some time previous to

their demitting office decided to appoint such a man, but it

was not till after the change of directors that the appoint -

ment was actually made. This officer is now on a probation

of three months' quration, and will, I think, prove suitable.
