In January 1897 it was generally known among

the Police that there was a gambling house in Wa Lane, fre-

quented by the class of people that frequent the Chinese

brothels in the neighbourhood, that is to say shopkeepers and prostitutes. I never mentioned the subject to any of the

European Police. I heard of the existence of the house from

the Chinese Detective Constable who told me that it was the

gambling house people who were giving the dinner. After that

I frequently heard mention of the gambling house in Wa Lane

from Chinese outside the Police,I heard mention of it from

Leung Iu, an informer to the Opium Farm, also from a shop-

keeper who keeps a Chinese shoe shop about 3 or 4 doors

east of the corner of Morrison Street in Queen's Road. I

know one of the masters of the shop, and he has mentionea

the house in conversation and asked me if I was getting mo-

ney from them. I have heard the house mentioned by so many

Chinese inhabitants that it was evident to me that the Chi-

nese population knew generally of the existence of the house.

I do not know what European Police received

bribes from the gambling house. Such a matter is kept very

quiet among members of the Force.

I heard the house mentioned so often by Chi-

nese in conversation with them that I concluded any of the

about the house as I did. I concluded that the Inspector in
