„PONE

sir,

I have the honour to report for your informa --

tion that at 11 a.m. this day,Prisoner J. Witchell had an in-

terview with the Superintendent of the Gaol and requested a

private interview which was refused,he then asked to be al-

lowed to write H. E. the Governor, this the Superintendent

also refused as the prisoner had not stated any reason for

such request.

About 11.45 a.m. this day, I saw Prisoner J.

Witchell when he again asked for a private interview with

the Superintendent. I asked him why he so particularly wish-

ed to see the Superintendent privately, in answer he said “I

wish to express my extreme sorrow for anything I have ever

said against Mr.May; I justly deserved my punishment; I was

placed in a position and betrayed my trust". I then supplied

him with writing materials and told him he could state in

writing any thing he wished and I would forward it to the

Superintendent.

Honourable

Superintendent.

I have,&c.,

(Sa.) R. H. CRAIG,

Chief Warder.
