In the very valuable reports from the Governors
of Colonies in reply to your despatch relating to the Trade
of the British Empire and Foreign Competition, presented to
the Houses of Parliament in July of this year Sir William
Robinson of Hong Kong, reports in paragraph 56 as follows:-
"Soaps.- There used to be a very good imitation of
"Pears' soap on this market. Pears' soap is very
"largely advertised, and nearly every Chinese dealer
"keeps German imitations of this soap and the brand is
"so like the original that it is difficult to
"discriminate.
"The labels and the packages are identical. It is
"shipped from Antwerp, and comes straight to Hong Kong."
With relation to this we desire to ask whether some
Government assistance
cannot be rendered to us and people
