Food am in receipt of your letter, Nr 25069/97, dated the 24th inst., stating that as I am implicated in the present corruption among Hong Kong Police, it has been decided not to renew my engagement for further service in Hong Kong.

In reply, I beg respectfully to mention my entire innocence of any such thing and would be grateful if I could be informed as to what evidence there is and what is the nature of the charge against me.

(2) I would beg leave to mention that within recent years, I have done more than any other member of the Hong Kong Police to root out Corruption Among the native Police. And in one case, I beg leave to mention here in point. For in August 1893, I prosecuted an S.C.D. Chinese detective for attempting to bribe me in the execution of my duty, when the case came before the Police Magistrate.
