Sir,

3, Rothesay Terrace, Barras Road,
Coventry
24th Nov. 1897

I have the honour to respectfully draw your attention to the circumstances of my resignation from the staff of Queen's College, Hong Kong, which I joined in February 1887.

The cause of my resignation was the repeated warnings of two medical advisers that my health was so seriously undermined as to render me unfit for further residence in that climate. Moreover, Dr. Manson urged upon me the necessity of living there under conditions impossible for a person of my limited income.

The state of my health, no doubt, was due in no small degree to the assiduous efforts I made in compliance with the wishes of the Government to acquire a knowledge of the Chinese language and literature while performing my ordinary school duties.

I regret to state that I now find my long residence abroad and resignation on account of ill-health preclude the possibility of obtaining an appointment in England. I therefore beg that my case may be considered for compensation, either in the form of a pension or grant in lieu of pension, or a subordinate post in the Home Civil Service.

I enclose copies of testimonials received...
