Sir,

I am directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to

acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 5 instant regarding your appt. as Warder in the Gaol Hospital Hong Kong

and to inform you that you have been passed as physically fit for service, and

that you have accordingly been selected for appointment as column below.

2. I am to express regret that the particulars of this appointment, Enclosed in

communicated to you by the letter from this Department of the 22 ultimo was sent to you by

inadvertence,

the rule there described applies only to officers,

whose service at home has been in

civil capacity.

3. The Crown Agents for the Colonies have been

instructed to take

your passage

by the first

available Steamer

in June, and to pay for

your Engagement.

the bounty of £25

and I am to request you to

inform me whether you will be prepared to start at that time.

4. You should communicate with the Crown Agents, whose address is

Downing Street, S. W., as to the agreement which you are required to sign with

regard to the cost of your passage.

I am to

state that it is not possible to dispense with this agreement.

5. You will receive a formal letter of appointment from the Governor

when

you arrive in the Colony.
