Sir,

Downing Street,

May 1897.

Referring to your Despatch No 40 of the 2nd March last, I have the honour to inform you that I have selected Mr Corporal C. Underwood, of the Medical Staff Corps,

for appointment as Hospital Warder in the Gool Hospital at Hong Kong:

2. The Crown Agents will be desired to provide him, on his signing the usual agreement, with a free passage to the Colony by the first Steamer in June.

3. You will be good enough to give him a formal letter of appointment when he arrives in the Colony, stating that you appoint him on the conditions embodied in his correspondence with this Department, a copy of which is enclosed. The paper of particulars referred to in the enclosed letter of the 22nd April is identical with that sent to Mr Holmes, whose appointment you reported to me in your despatch no.

I have the honour to be,

Your most obedient humble Servant,

Las

The Officer administering the Government of Hong Kong
