India Office, Whitehall, London, S.W.

6th March 1897.

Sir,

I am directed by the Secretary of State for India in Council to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 10th instant, relative to the claim to pension in respect of Indian service of Dr. P.B. Ayres, Colonial Surgeon at Hong Kong; and to state that a reference on the subject will be made to the Government of India, and, on receipt of a reply, a further communication will be addressed to you.

I am to add that the question arises whether Dr. Ayres' case may not come under the rules framed and laid before Parliament in 1892, under the first section of the Superannuation Act of that year, for the grant of pensions for joint British and Indian service.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

A. Godley

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
