THE PLAGUE.

GOING BEYOND CONTROL.

REPORTED

AT KANDAHAR.

PRECAUTIONS AGAINST INFECTION.

BOMBAY, Sunday.-The plague is now said to be beyond control. No fewer than 114 cases terminated fatally in this city in the 24 hours ended Saturday, while the deaths from all causes in that period numbered 270. Yesterday morning, by order of the municipality, 20 small houses close to Government House, containing 200 people, among whom several cases of plague had appeared, were burned down as a measure of precaution.-Dalziel.

OUTBREAK IN AFGHANISTAN.

TASHKEND, Sunday. A report from the Governor of the Transcaspian territory has reached here announcing that the plague has broken out at Kandahar. Instructions have consequently been given to keep close watch along the Amu Daria, and to establish a military cordon from the source of the river Aktash to Wansh (?). The force set apart for this purpose is to consist of four sotnias of Cossacks, the troops

of the frontier guard, and 12 companies of Bokharan troops, General Yonoff, of Pamir fame, will be in command.--Reuter.

Sir,

...

I am directed by the Secretary of State for India to

...

return the letter from Miss Mc.Intosh, offering her services

from Paris

as a Nurse for the Plague patients in India, which services

the Bombay Government have accepted.

**

On learning from Miss Mc.Intosh the date on which she can start, a first-class passage ticket from London to Bombay

will be forwarded to her.

...

at Marseilles, Miss Mc.Intosh prefers.

I am to ask whether Miss Mc.Intosh will receive

her Hong Kong absentee allowance while serving as a Volunteer

at Bombay. If so, Lord George Hamilton proposes to offer her,

on behalf of the Bombay Government, with effect from her

arrival in Bombay, the salary usually paid in Bombay to a first-class Nurse, plus first-class passage tickets from

London to Bombay and from Bombay to Hong Kong.

I am to

enquire whether such terms would be approved by Mr. Secretary

Chamberlain.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

...

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
