One month from the date of such expiration. The salary to be paid to the person engaged shall be at the rate of Two thousand four hundred dollars ($2400) per annum. He will also receive travelling allowance at the rate of Two hundred and eighty-eight dollars ($288) per annum. Half salary will be paid during the voyage out and home again: on satisfactory termination of this engagement. Full salary will commence from the date of arrival in the Colony.

The person engaged shall on arrival in Hong Kong reside where ordered and faithfully and diligently employ the whole of his time in the service of the Government, as an Assistant Sanitary Surveyor in the Public Works Department.

His duties shall include the inspection of houses and house drains and reporting on their sanitary condition, the surveying of premises and buildings erected thereon together with the preparation of plans thereof, and the laying out of cemeteries usually performed by a Surveyor or Engineer. He shall also perform such other duties as he may be instructed to perform by the Director of Public Works or the Sanitary Board or such Officer of the Public Works Department or Sanitary Board as the Governor may from time to time direct. He shall in all things be subservient to and obey the orders and directions of the Director of Public Works or the Sanitary Board or other duly authorised Officer and shall not directly or indirectly engage on his own or be concerned in any other service or business whatsoever, or receive commissions, profits, or any kind, and he shall use his utmost exertions to promote the interests of the Government.

In the event of the Government becoming desirous of determining the engagement of the person engaged during the currency of the same, the Government shall be at liberty to do so on giving him Three months' notice (signed by any authorised Officer) determinable at any period of the year, or on the Government paying him one month's salary. In such case, he shall be provided with a free passage, second class by steamer to England, including railway fare, third class to his place of abode. The Government shall also provide him with a similar free passage if, by reason of his own ill health not caused by impropriety of conduct, he shall, under the certificate of a Medical Officer appointed for that purpose by the Government, be discharged from his engagement, and provided he shall be desirous of returning to England. But if he shall resign or be discharged for any other cause, he shall refund to the Government or to the Crown Agents for the Colonies the amount paid for his passage to the Colony and shall have no return passage. The return passage, if required, must be claimed within one calendar month of his discharge, resignation, or the determination of his Agreement.
