Agreement made the 14th day of June One thousand eight hundred and ninety-seven Between The Undersigned One of the Crown Agents for the Colonies of Downing Street London in the County of Middlesex acting for and on behalf of The Government of Hong Kong (hereinafter called the Government) of the one part and Joseph James Bryan of 3, Langshaw Street, Old Trafford, Manchester in the County of Lancaster of the other part Whereby it is agreed by and between the parties hereto as follows:-
The said Joseph James Bryan (hereinafter called the person engaged) is hereby selected for appointment as an Assistant Sanitary Surveyor in the Public Works Department of Hong Kong for service under the Sanitary Board of that Colony on the terms and conditions hereinafter set forth.
The term of engagement of the person engaged shall be Three years from the date of his arrival in Hong Kong which period may be extended as provided in clause 10.
The person engaged shall proceed to Hong Kong at such time as shall be prescribed by the Crown Agents for the Colonies the Government providing him with railway fare third class to port of embarkation, and a free passage second class to Hong Kong and (subject to Clause 1) back again to England including railway fare third class to place of abode on the expiration of this Agreement provided he leaves for England within
