one month from the date of such expiration

The salary to be paid to the person engaged shall be at the rate of One thousand five hundred and sixty dollars ($1560) per annum. He will also be allowed the sum of One hundred and forty-four dollars ($144) per annum for conveyance. Half salary will be paid during the voyage out and home again on satisfactory termination of this engagement. Full salary from the date of arrival in the Colony.

5. The person engaged shall on arrival in Hong Kong reside where ordered and faithfully and diligently employ the whole of his time in the service of the Government as an Overseer in the Public Works Department. His duties will be the ordinary duties of Overseer and will include estimating and measuring up all repairs to Government buildings and scheduling and billing the same, in addition to any other suitable duties which the Government or any duly authorised Officer may call upon him to perform. He shall in all things be subservient to and obey the orders and directions of the Government and shall not directly or indirectly engage or be concerned in any other service or business whatsoever or receive commissions or profits of any kind, and he shall use his utmost exertions to promote the interests of the Government.

In the event of the Government becoming desirous of determining the engagement of the person engaged at any time during the currency of the same, it shall be at liberty to do so on giving him Three months' notice (signed by any authorised Officer), determinable at any period of the year, or on the Government paying him one month's salary; and in either case he shall be provided with a free passage, second class by Steamer to England, including railway fare to place of abode. The Government shall also provide him with a similar free passage if, by reason of ill-health not caused by his own impropriety of conduct, he shall, under the Certificate of a Medical Officer appointed for that purpose by the Government, be discharged from or compelled to give up his engagement with the Government, and provided he shall be desirous of returning to England; but if he shall resign his appointment from any other cause, he shall refund to the Government or to the Crown Agents for the Colonies the amount paid for his passage to the Colony, and shall have no claim to a return passage.

The return passage, if required, must be claimed within one calendar month. If the person engaged shall at any time neglect or refuse, or from any cause (other than illness not caused by his own impropriety of conduct) become unable to perform or comply with all or any of the provisions of this Agreement, or all or any of the duties required of him, or all or any of the orders or directions of the Government or its representatives, or shall correspond verbally or otherwise, directly or indirectly, in or about the affairs of the Government with any person not in the employment of the Government, or shall publish directly or indirectly any document...
